What is Panchang?
Panchang (from panch-anga, 'five limbs') is the traditional Hindu almanac. Its five elements – Vara (weekday), Tithi (lunar day), Nakshatra (lunar mansion), Yoga, and Karana – are all derived from the positions of the Sun and Moon, and together they describe the quality of a given moment for rituals, travel, and auspicious beginnings.
How is today's Tithi calculated?
A Tithi is the time the Moon takes to move 12° ahead of the Sun. The angular distance between the Moon and the Sun is divided into 30 steps of 12° each, giving the 30 tithis of a lunar month – 15 in the waxing (Shukla) fortnight and 15 in the waning (Krishna) fortnight.
What ayanamsa and method does this Panchang use?
This Panchang uses the sidereal zodiac with the Lahiri (Chitrapaksha) ayanamsa and Drik Ganita (true astronomical positions computed from VSOP87/ELP2000 ephemeris data), the same basis used for the natal charts on this site. Values are shown for Indian Standard Time (IST).
Why does the Panchang change through the day?
The Moon moves about 13° per day, so the Tithi, Nakshatra, Karana, and Yoga each change roughly once a day – but not at midnight. Each one ends at the exact moment its underlying angle crosses the next boundary, which is why this page shows the time each element runs 'upto'.
