What is Kundli matching (Gun Milan)?
Kundli matching, also called Gun Milan or Ashtakoot Milan, is the traditional Vedic method of checking marriage compatibility between two people using their birth horoscopes. It compares eight factors (kootas) based on each person's Moon nakshatra and rashi, giving a score out of 36 gunas.
How many gunas are required for marriage?
Traditionally, at least 18 out of 36 gunas is considered the minimum for an acceptable match. A score of 25–32 is very good, and 32–36 is excellent. Below 18 is usually not recommended.
Is 18 gunas enough for marriage?
Yes, 18 gunas is generally treated as the acceptable threshold. However, the total score is not the whole picture – the presence of Nadi Dosha or Bhakoot Dosha is weighed separately, and astrologers also look at Manglik status and overall chart strength before concluding.
What is Manglik Dosha and does it stop a marriage?
Manglik (Mangal) Dosha occurs when Mars sits in the 1st, 4th, 7th, 8th, or 12th house from the Ascendant. It does not automatically stop a marriage. If both partners are Manglik, the dosha is considered mutually cancelled; if only one is, astrologers weigh cancellations such as Mars in its own or exalted sign before deciding.
What is Nadi Dosha and why does it matter?
Nadi Dosha occurs when both partners share the same Nadi (Aadi, Madhya, or Antya). Nadi carries the highest weight (8 of 36 gunas) and is linked to health and progeny, so it is treated as a significant concern even when the total score is otherwise good. Astrologers check for cancellation factors and remedies rather than treating it as a final verdict.
